How to Move a Website from Squarespace to VernalWeb

Squarespace gives you polish, but not portability. Like other closed builders, it lets you export blog posts and basic pages, but not your full design or every content type. Moving to VernalWeb means bringing across what exports cleanly and rebuilding the rest on a platform you fully control — usually WordPress.

What Squarespace exports

  • Blog posts, basic pages and images export to a WordPress-compatible file.
  • Not exported: product pages, album pages, some blocks, and your design/styles.

Step 1: Export from Squarespace

In Squarespace, use its export option to download the WordPress-format (WXR) file. This contains the content it is able to move.

Step 2: Set up WordPress on VernalWeb

Get your hosting ready and install WordPress. Choose a theme for your new site.

Step 3: Import your content

In WordPress, go to Tools → Import, choose the WordPress importer, and upload the file from Squarespace. Then review every page and post — imports are rarely perfect, so expect some tidying.

Step 4: Rebuild what didn't transfer

Recreate product pages, galleries and any special layouts manually. Re-upload media where needed. This is also a good moment to improve structure and speed.

Step 5: Move your domain and preserve SEO

Point your domain at your new hosting (update nameservers or use A records), install SSL, keep URLs consistent, and add redirects for any that change. Submit a fresh sitemap.

Frequently asked questions

Will my Squarespace design come with me?

No, the design stays behind. You will pick or build a WordPress theme. Most people see this as a chance to get a faster, more flexible site rather than a loss.

My store didn't export — what now?

Squarespace commerce pages do not export cleanly. Rebuild your shop with WooCommerce, which gives you full control over products and checkout.

Can VernalWeb help with the move?

We can guide you and handle the hosting side. Because Squarespace is a closed platform, some rebuilding is unavoidable, but open a ticket and we will help where we can.
