How to Migrate Your Website from Wix to WordPress

Wix is easy to start with, but many people outgrow it and want the freedom of self-hosted WordPress. There is one honest thing to know up front: Wix is a closed platform, so there is no one-click export of your whole site. The move is very doable, but it involves rebuilding the structure and bringing your content across.

What can and cannot be moved

Blog posts can often be imported via Wix's RSS feed into WordPress.
Pages, text and images are moved manually or with a migration tool, since Wix does not export them cleanly.
Design does not transfer — you will choose a fresh WordPress theme, which is usually an upgrade anyway.

Step 1: Set up hosting and WordPress

Get your hosting ready and install WordPress. Pick a theme you like as the new home for your content.

Step 2: Bring your blog posts across

If you blogged on Wix, use your Wix RSS feed with WordPress's importer (Tools → Import → RSS) to pull posts in. It is not always complete, so review each post afterwards.

Step 3: Rebuild pages and re-add media

Recreate your main pages in WordPress and upload your images to the Media Library. This is manual, but it is your chance to tidy and improve as you go.

Step 4: Point your domain to WordPress

If your domain was registered through Wix, you will update its DNS or nameservers to point at your new hosting — see pointing a domain with A records or updating nameservers. Set up SSL once it resolves.

Step 5: Preserve your SEO

Keep your page URLs as close to the originals as possible, and set up redirects for any that change so you do not lose rankings. A sitemap helps Google re-index the new site.
