How to Free Up Space When Your Mailbox Is Full

When a mailbox fills up, new messages stop arriving and senders may get a bounce. Email counts against your hosting disk space, so a crammed inbox — especially with big attachments — can quietly hit your quota. Clearing space is quick once you know where to look.

Step 1: See how much space email is using

In cPanel, open Email Accounts to see each mailbox's usage against its quota. The Disk Usage tool shows how much of your total space email occupies overall.

Step 2: Clear the big offenders

• Large attachments — sort your mail by size in webmail and delete or download the biggest.
• Old sent mail and drafts — these count too, and are easy to forget.
• The Trash and Spam folders — deleting from the inbox is not enough; empty these to actually reclaim space.
• Junk that piled up — clear it, then stop it recurring; see stopping spam.

Step 3: Increase the quota (if you have room)

If the mailbox genuinely needs more space and your account has spare disk, raise that mailbox's quota in Email Accounts → Manage. If your whole account is near full, you may need to upgrade your plan.

Step 4: Prevent it happening again

Using IMAP keeps everything on the server, which is convenient but uses space. Archive old mail locally, empty Trash regularly, and keep an eye on large attachments.
