How to Fix a Full Mailbox and Free Up Email Storage
When a mailbox fills up, new messages start bouncing back to senders — not a good look. The fix is simply to free up space or raise the mailbox’s limit. Here is how to sort it quickly.
First, find what is using the space
Log in to webmail or cPanel and look in these usual suspects:
- Trash / Deleted Items — often holds gigabytes people forget about.
- Spam / Junk — can quietly balloon over time.
- Sent — especially messages with large attachments.
- Large attachments — sort by size and clear the biggest first.
Free up space
- Delete large and old messages you no longer need.
- Empty the Trash and Spam folders — deleting only moves mail to Trash, so this step is essential to actually reclaim space.
- If using IMAP, allow a moment for the changes to sync.
Raise the mailbox quota
If you simply need more room:
- In cPanel, open Email → Email Accounts.
- Click Manage next to the mailbox.
- Increase the Storage Space (or set it to unlimited, within your plan’s space).
- Save the change.
Remember your total email storage counts toward your account’s disk usage, so if the whole account is full you may need to clear files or upgrade your plan.
Frequently asked questions
Why do deleted emails still take up space?
Deleting usually moves mail to Trash rather than removing it. You must empty Trash (and Spam) to truly free the space.
Does using POP3 instead of IMAP save space?
POP3 can download mail off the server, freeing space, but you lose sync across devices. Weigh that against the IMAP vs POP3 trade-offs.
My mailbox is full but the account has space.
Then it is the individual mailbox quota. Raise it using the steps above and mail will flow again.
