How to Set Up Your VernalWeb Email in Mozilla Thunderbird

Mozilla Thunderbird is a free, well-loved desktop email program, and it works beautifully with your VernalWeb mailbox. Once it is set up with IMAP, your mail stays in sync across every device — read something on your phone and it shows as read in Thunderbird too.

Before you start

Have your full email address and its password ready. If you have not created the mailbox yet, see creating an email account in cPanel.

Step 1: Add the account

Open Thunderbird and go to Account Settings → Account Actions → Add Mail Account.
Enter your name, full email address and password.
Click Configure manually so you can set the correct servers.

Step 2: Enter the server settings

Use these values, replacing yourdomain.com with your actual domain:

Incoming (IMAP): server mail.yourdomain.com, port 993, SSL/TLS, normal password.
Outgoing (SMTP): server mail.yourdomain.com, port 465 (SSL/TLS) or 587 (STARTTLS), normal password.
Username: your full email address for both.

Click Re-test, then Done.

Step 3: Send a test message

Frequently asked questions

Should I choose IMAP or POP?

IMAP, in almost every case. It keeps mail on the server and in sync across devices. POP downloads and removes mail to one computer, which is rarely what people want today.

Thunderbird cannot connect. What is wrong?

Nine times out of ten it is a wrong port or SSL setting, or using just the mailbox name instead of the full email address as the username. Recheck the values above carefully.

My mailbox is filling up on the server.

Because IMAP keeps everything on the server, storage counts against your account. Clear old mail or increase your quota — see managing your mailbox and consider archiving locally in Thunderbird.
