How to Choose and Change Your Node.js Version in cPanel
In cPanel you choose your Node.js version per application in the "Setup Node.js App" tool — and you can change it later from the same screen. Picking the right version matters, because some apps need a specific one to run correctly.
Where to set it
Log in to cPanel and open Setup Node.js App (under the Software section). When you create an application, one of the first choices is the Node.js version from a dropdown of the versions your hosting offers.
Changing the version of an existing app
- Open Setup Node.js App.
- Click Edit on your application.
- Select a different version from the Node.js version dropdown.
- Save, then restart the app so the change takes effect.
Which version should you choose?
- Prefer an LTS (Long-Term Support) version for stability — these are well-supported and secure.
- Match your app's requirements — check its documentation or
package.jsonengines field for a required version. - Avoid very old versions, which miss security fixes.
If the version your app needs is not listed, open a support ticket and we will let you know what is available. For first-time setup, see setting up a Node.js application in cPanel.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my app fail after changing versions?
Some packages are built against a specific Node version. After changing, run NPM Install again to rebuild dependencies — see installing npm packages in cPanel — then restart.
Can I run different apps on different versions?
Yes — each application in Setup Node.js App has its own version, so you can run several apps on different Node versions on the same account.
What if the version I need isn't available?
The available versions depend on the server. If you need one that is not listed, contact support and we will advise on options for your plan.
