What is an FTP Client?

Written by VernalWeb

FTP stands for file transfer protocol. FTP is one kind of protocol for exchanging files over any network that supports the TCP/IP protocol.

Basically, two computers are involved in FTP system.

  1. A server
  2. A client

Through FTP server software, the FTP server waits on the network for connection requests from other computers. With FTP client software, client computer initiates a connection to the server. Once both computers are connected, the client can process the file manipulation operation such like uploading, downloading, renaming or deleting files from the server.

Some most popular FTP clients are:

  • FileZilla
  • CuteFTP
  • WinSCP (for Windows only)
  • Transmit (for Mac OS only)
  • FireFTP (Firefox extension)
  • Cyberduck

Browser can also be used for FTP connection.
